Unsignalized Pedestrian Crossings: New Zealand’s Technical Recommendation

نویسنده

چکیده

I n New Zealand, as well as many other countries, unsignalized, marked pedestrian crossings are known as zebra crossings. Last year, the New Zealand National Roads Board (NRB) published a technical recommendation (TR1l ) that sets out standards for the installation and upgrading of zebra crossings.’ The report also includes statutory requirements and recommendations on warrants, location criteria, and maintenance. This article presents a brief outline of the background work and safety concerns that led to the preparation of the technical recommendation. In this article, the term pedestrian crossing refers to an unsignalized but marked crossing, located at either an unsignalized intersection or mid-block.

Motorist Yield Rate Model at Unsignalized Crossings

Preliminary notes A research was conducted, for the paper, in two countries in the South-Eastern Europe region, at multiple pedestrian crossing locations in order to determine the value of motorist yield rate (MYR). The data gathered at 32 locations were used to define a mathematical model for MYR depending on location characteristics and vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow characteristics. U...

Pedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...

Towards Modelling Pedestrian-Vehicle Interactions: Empirical Study on Urban Unsignalized Intersection

The modelling and simulation of the interaction among vehicles and pedestrians during crosswalking is an open challenge for both research and practical computational solutions supporting urban/traffic decision makers and managers. The social cost of pedestrians’ risky behaviour pushes the development of a new generation of computational models integrating analytical knowledge, data and experien...

The Contribution to the Procedure of Capacity Determination at Unsignalized Priority-controlled Intersections

The problem of minor vehicles crossing or merging into the major stream at unsignalized priority-controlled intersections is well-known. Numerous solutions involve various assumptions concerning the major headway distributions, number of major lanes, critical gap distributions, etc. Such cases can be divided into two main groups: intersections with two streams (one major and one minor stream) a...

Pedestrian Delay at Signalized Intersections with a Two-Stage Crossing Design

usually staggered to separate the two crossings as shown in Figure 2. Staggered crossings are designed to force pedestrians to face the upcoming traffic and to avoid the confusion that pedestrians may see the further pedestrian signal indication when they are supposed to follow the first-stage signal. Staggered crossings are implemented widely in the United Kingdom and Japan and are recommended...
